The sculpting I did on the puppet boy was very subtle and was meant to only give a slight surface aberration and in the final renders I knocked it back even more. The base mesh was modelled by Rich Wright while I UV’d, textured and sculpted him.
This was the low resolution mesh that Rich gave me.
The sculpted model at top and below the new low res mesh for Lightwave..
Then, with the addition of textures we have this

I’ve just been trawling through my archives and found this, some preliminary work into a 3D model of the CocoPops monkey. Sculpt and initial mesh in 3D Coat, rendered in Lightwave
Nice Work RW and Paddy!.. Always liked this character, it was such a big shame, and thinking about it, maybe a pivotal role in Ark, as I think if it had not got banned, Kelloggs might have kept coming back, I think they were really nice ad`s. Banned tho? strange!
Yeah its wasn’t banned because of anything we’d done. It was the strap line that the agency added about having Cocopops AFTER school. The Advertising Standards people decided it went too far. Previous adverts had already mentioned before school and as a snack.
I think the new racing advert is quite good but it lacks the gentle naivety and humour that ours had and I don’t think it reaches such a wide audience. And we can’t forget that the first advert that Steve, Craig and Tim did was the single most successful advert in Kelloggs history. Still its their first one and I’m sure they’ll improve.
Anyway don’t neglect your own role in this .. the last 3/4 of the work was just you, Rich B and myself.
heh, yea I do recall the last few weeks. Especially having to get all that ‘mo-cap’ working 😉 not just re-animating the whole thing! Grrrr the ‘creatives’!
Thought I’d just point out some info I gained more recently.
Kelloggs where going through a major rebranding and change to their ingredients . . reducing sugars and fats, and in the process decided to change their agency to get a completely different look. Thats the actual reason we lost the contract. That we did the puppet boy at all was actually down to their good will and allowing us to finish it rather than drop it all together.
Hi Paddy, Just came across your site and started reading the comments.
Interesting to read the backstory. Nice work mate
